Weight: Nylon, acrylic, and polypropylene are lighter than silk; cotton, linen, viscose, and modal are heavier than silk; while vinylon, wool, acetate, and polyester are similar in weight to silk.
Strength: When stretched by hand until it breaks, weaker fibers include adhesive‑coated fabrics, acetate, and wool, while stronger ones include silk, cotton, linen, and synthetic fibers. Fibers that show a marked reduction in strength when wetted—such as protein‑based fibers, viscose, and cuprammonium rayon—are also identifiable.
Elasticity: When stretched by hand, wool and acetate exhibit relatively low elasticity, cotton and linen show moderate elasticity, while silk, viscose, rayon, and most synthetic fibers display higher elasticity.
