Customers often report that custom‑made work uniforms used to suffer from a variety of quality issues, which were difficult to detect during procurement, resulting in significant losses. So how can the quality of work uniforms be properly assessed? Experts have distilled the process into five key aspects:

　　I. Appearance of Workwear: Workwear should be neat and well‑pressed, with left–right symmetry, neatly folded, and all seams and areas smoothly ironed, free of missed ironing or permanent creases. The garment must be free of loose threads and lint. Thread specifications—color, texture, strength, and shrinkage rate—should be compatible with the fabric, ensuring consistency between the two to maintain both intrinsic quality and aesthetic appeal. Button color should harmonize with the fabric color.

　　II. Specifications and Dimensions of Workwear. The designation of garment sizes shall be in accordance with the relevant provisions of the “Garment Size Series” standard. Dimensional tolerances shall be limited to the tolerance ranges permitted by the standard.

　　III. Color Difference in Workwear Color difference is a key requirement for workwear fabrics. According to national standards, the collar and pocket linings of the upper garment, as well as the side seams of the trousers, are designated as critical areas; color differences exceeding Grade 4 are unacceptable, while other surface areas may be rated up to Grade 4. The assessment of color difference in workwear relies on the “Color Fastness to Bleaching Sample Card,” which is one of the national standards originally established by the former Ministry of Textile Industry. This sample card comprises five pairs of gray reference swatches, graded into five levels. Grade 5 represents the highest level of color fastness, with no perceptible color difference, whereas Grades 4 through 1 indicate progressively greater fading, with Grade 1 being the most severe.

　　4. Defects in Workwear. The standard stipulates that each distinct section may contain only one defect. In other words, if a defect is present on a garment piece, no additional defects are permitted on the patch pockets or pocket flaps within that same section. The types of defects vary depending on the fabric used. Assessment must be conducted in accordance with the standard’s requirements. A “distinct section” refers to the areas into which a garment piece is divided; based on the garment’s primary components, these sections are designated as Areas 1, 2, 3, and 4. Each area corresponds to a specific region on the garment piece.

　　5. Sewing of Workwear: The stitch density for visible seams (including concealed seams) is specified as 14–18 stitches per 3 cm. Given the wide variety of fabrics available, different stitch densities should be selected to ensure both the garment’s appearance and durability. For example, stiffer fabrics may require a slightly looser stitch density, while softer, more pliable fabrics can accommodate a tighter stitch pattern. Seam lines must not be bent or curved arbitrarily; they should conform to the intended silhouette of the workwear. Seams should be neat, free of overlapping threads, skipped stitches, or loose threads, with clear, well‑defined stitching. The start and end backstitches must be secure, the length of the seam allowances appropriate, and there should be no missed stitches or unraveling. Additionally, the tension of the sewing thread should be matched to the fabric’s thickness and texture.
