Washing work uniforms is a routine task that workers perform daily. Some people wash their work clothes very quickly, simply rinsing them and hanging them to dry. In fact, this practice isn’t ideal. Generally, when laundering workwear, it’s best to soak the garments in water for a period of time. This approach offers several advantages, which we’ll outline below. First, soaking allows dust and sweat adhering to the fabric surface to detach and dissolve into the water, thereby improving washing quality while also reducing detergent usage. Water penetration enables the fabric to swell fully before coming into contact with the cleaning solution, causing embedded dirt to be squeezed out and brought to the surface, where it can be easily removed. Second, some dyed fabrics have poor colorfastness and are prone to fading. Pre-soaking work uniforms helps identify such issues early, allowing preventive measures to be taken during the washing process. The amount of water used should be sufficient, and the soaking time should be determined based on the garment’s type, material, age, level of soiling, and dye‑fixation properties. As a general guideline: down jackets—5–10 minutes; synthetic‑fiber garments—15 minutes; worsted wool garments—15–20 minutes; tweed or coarse wool garments—20–30 minutes; blankets and knitted sweaters—20 minutes.
