Researchers at Mexico’s most important public institution of advanced technical education, the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), are currently developing synthetic raw materials from rubber that could be used to produce “smart” clothing. According to Adrián Fuentes, head of the Research Department at IPN’s School of Textile Engineering, these synthetic materials will be stronger, lighter, more durable, and more elastic. The current research is in the first phase of a “smart” design project, focusing on synthesis, chemical modification, and the characterization of polymer properties, with the goal of producing waterproof cotton fabrics using latex. Once this new technology is applied to natural fibers, it will yield textiles suitable for a wide range of industries—information that will prove invaluable in the second phase, when “smart” garments are manufactured. Experts note that, thanks to Mexico’s abundant natural rubber production, the country possesses significant potential to scale up the manufacture of these novel materials. Mr. Fuentes explained that rubber exists in polymeric form and can be molded into virtually any shape, ranging from amorphous (soft) to crystalline (hard). In addition to its elasticity, natural rubber becomes waterproof when vulcanized and resists acids and alkalis; it also exhibits insulating properties against heat and electricity. Taken together, these characteristics make rubber highly versatile for apparel development. Specialists recommend that Mexico leverage its advantages in natural rubber production to expand the use of such innovative materials, positioning itself as a leader in high‑value‑added products. Researchers further report that nylon‑6 can be combined with various chemical processes to create fire‑resistant threads, which could be used to manufacture protective gear for firefighters and adapted for other applications as well.
