The integration of the traditional apparel industry with the internet is poised to reach an innovation peak.

Today, the apparel industry has evolved into a sector that integrates cutting-edge technologies across the internet, encompassing a comprehensive system that blends craftsmanship, innovation, and art. However, judging from the current state of China’s apparel industry, the market is flooded with products of uneven quality—many are poorly made and hastily produced—and most companies remain stuck at the stage of contract manufacturing, private-label production, and exporting low‑value goods. Following the intense market reshuffling of 2015, in 2016 the Chinese apparel industry saw larger enterprises placing even greater emphasis on brand‑driven quality assurance, particularly those that have endured years of fierce competition and thus earned significant industry influence. Meanwhile, smaller firms, constrained by their own circumstances and various other factors, face mounting challenges in simply “surviving.”

The integration of the traditional apparel industry with the internet is poised to reach an innovation peak.

Today, the apparel industry has evolved into a sector that integrates cutting-edge technologies across the board, encompassing a comprehensive ecosystem of craftsmanship, innovation, and art. However, judging from the current state of China’s apparel industry, the market is flooded with products of uneven quality and poor workmanship, with most firms still stuck at the stage of contract manufacturing, private-label production, and exporting low‑value-added goods.

Following the intense market reshuffling of 2015, in 2016 China’s apparel industry saw larger companies placing even greater emphasis on brand‑quality assurance—particularly those that have weathered years of fierce competition and thereby earned significant industry influence. Meanwhile, smaller firms, constrained by their circumstances and a host of other factors, found survival to be an increasingly pressing concern, driving an ever‑stronger pursuit of short‑term gains.

For the apparel industry, while safeguarding brand equity and product quality, it is equally important not to overlook mobile internet and smart technologies. This is because intelligent manufacturing in apparel relies on the integration of internet‑related technologies, forming a tightly coupled whole. For instance, the convergence of big data, internet‑based remote monitoring, and real‑time data transmission has given rise to comprehensive, intelligent, and information‑driven production solutions—approaches that are already being adopted by many leading apparel companies and are widely recognized as the inevitable path forward for the industry.

In addition to producing high‑quality, cost‑effective products, apparel brands must integrate their operations with mobile‑internet‑driven business models—a step that is now indispensable. Only by continuously strengthening consumers’ attachment to their offerings can brands secure an unbeatable position in future competition. Turning audiences into brand loyalists will continue to fuel the battle for fans among apparel companies, as mobile internet has shattered traditional, fragmented communication barriers, offering consumers more opportunities to connect with and engage with brands. The internet’s ability to aggregate niche yet distinct consumer needs, coupled with innovations spurred by the fragmentation of time and space, is driving the maturation of new business models in the apparel sector.

As for domestic brand‑management models, take Muzi Ma as an example: from a product standpoint, the brand uses premium linen as its primary fabric and adheres to stringent standards in craftsmanship, texture, and attention to detail. Its designs are both fashionable and elegant, infused with Chinese aesthetic elements, perfectly capturing the essence of linen. From a business‑model perspective, by leveraging the internet as a powerful tool, the brand effectively amplifies its reach and meets the identity‑seeking needs of its target audience. With innovative approaches that strive for excellence and deliver multi‑dimensional customer experiences, Muzi Ma has successfully integrated its brand with digital channels.

To break free from the current predicament—where it generates profits but fails to create lasting value—the apparel industry must focus on building distinctive, original, and globally recognized brands, integrate with internet technologies, and enhance resource efficiency across the entire value chain by consolidating and optimizing information and talent. There is every reason to believe that the full-scale adoption of internet‑based business models is an inevitable trend for the fashion industry.
