　　1. The concept of apparel materials—apparel materials refer collectively to the various fabrics, trims, and packaging materials used in the manufacture, decoration, and packaging of garments.

　　2. Scope of Apparel Materials — Apparel materials are categorized into the following three areas: (1) Outer fabrics: cotton, linen, wool, silk, synthetic fibers, and various blended fabrics. (2) Apparel trims: linings, padding, interlinings, pocketing fabrics, sewing threads, buttons, and decorative materials. (3) Packaging materials: wood, wrapping paper, paper boxes, cardboard boxes, desiccants, mothproofing agents, and mold‑preventing agents.

Essential Properties of Apparel Materials — Apparel materials must possess three key characteristics: (1) They must exhibit excellent physiological and hygienic performance, including good thermal conductivity and air permeability, breathability, moisture absorption, radiation resistance, stain resistance, and heat resistance, while maintaining an appropriate weight. (2) Their aesthetic quality must be appealing, meeting consumers’ increasingly high aesthetic expectations in terms of luster, hand feel, dyeability, and durability. (3) Apparel materials must also be practical, offering superior properties such as toughness, elasticity, abrasion resistance, formability, water resistance, resistance to embrittlement, protection against insect damage, mold resistance, lightfastness, and shrinkage resistance.

Definition and Properties of Textile Fibers — Fibers are defined as filamentous materials whose length is at least a thousand times greater than their diameter, with diameters typically ranging from a few micrometers to several tens of micrometers, and which possess a certain degree of flexibility. In nature, fibers come in many materials and forms; however, not all fiber materials are suitable for spinning and weaving. Only those fibers that meet the performance requirements of textile fabrics in terms of both end-use applications and processing techniques can be classified as textile fibers.

Properties of Textile Fibers — Textile fibers must possess the following six properties: (1) They must exhibit certain physical and mechanical characteristics, capable of withstanding specified levels of tensile, torsional, and frictional forces. (2) Their length and fineness must meet the requirements of textile processing, enabling them to interlock and form yarns. (3) Textile fibers should be flexible and possess a degree of elasticity—easily deformable yet able to recover their original shape effectively. (4) They must be poor conductors of heat, providing adequate thermal insulation. (5) They must have sufficient hygroscopicity and air permeability, facilitating the absorption of human perspiration and enabling effective dyeing and printing of fabrics. (6) They must demonstrate chemical stability, exhibiting resistance to light, heat, acids, alkalis, and other environmental factors.
