C2B customization or disrupting the traditional apparel model

As consumers’ demand for personalized, differentiated online apparel continues to evolve, an increasing number of traditional Taobao‑based brands can no longer meet their needs. In this context, the quiet rise in popularity of made-to-order clothing appears to be unlocking substantial market potential.

China’s custom manufacturing sector has reached a scale of hundreds of billions.

Once basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and transportation are met, consumers’ psychological motivations become increasingly sophisticated and diversified. This, in turn, manifests in consumption patterns as a hallmark of our era: the trend toward personalized consumption.

“As a non-standard, long-tail product category, apparel differs significantly from other segments like 3C electronics and fast-moving consumer goods in e‑commerce operations. Moreover, the growing trend toward personalized apparel is increasingly meeting consumers’ rising demand for customization.” According to Yang Yaqiong, an e‑commerce analyst at Analysys, under the framework of supply-side structural reform, apparel brands are taking a more proactive role, leveraging online retail channels to align with end‑consumer demand. Within the broader context of supply-chain collaboration, apparel e‑commerce will play a pivotal role in integrating and optimizing resources across the industry—presenting both challenges and opportunities.

“Customization” is a trend of the future.

As market competition continues to intensify, the industry is growing increasingly optimistic about the notion that “customization will disrupt traditional apparel.”

“Customization is a trend of the future.” In Li Chengdong’s view, another major advantage of customization is that it virtually eliminates inventory—a perennial headache for apparel brands. Excess stock not only ties up capital but also leads to significant markdowns when seasons pass; selling off such inventory at low prices can further damage a brand’s image. From this perspective, C2B customization has the potential to disrupt the traditional fashion industry.

Yang Yaqiong stated that the e‑commerce apparel customization strategy is still in its exploratory phase. Although industry giants began experimenting early on, they have yet to scale up—owing to factors such as market demand and the development of upstream manufacturers. Achieving this requires coordinated efforts across the entire value chain, and e‑commerce players must further strengthen their capabilities in resource integration. From the perspective of current competition, this approach bodes well for brand building and will steer long-term competitive dynamics in a more favorable direction.

Li Chengdong told reporters, “The apparel industry has shifted from an era of abundant choices to one increasingly defined by branding and differentiation; the emergence of distinct market segments is giving rise to more refined and specialized markets.”

In this regard, Yang Yaqiong views it as a test of seamless coordination across the industry chain—bridging upstream manufacturers, brand owners, retailers, and market demand. “Personalized customization represents an opportunity that e‑commerce can seize in its development. Beyond the apparel sector, other industries also have growing demands for customization, and realizing such personalized offerings requires e‑commerce companies to possess stronger capabilities in resource coordination and integration.”
